Barren Island is the only surviving volcano in India. Not only this, but Barren Island is also the only active volcano in South Asia. It is located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India. Barren Island volcano located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is 140 km from the capital Port Blair. It is situated at a distance of North-East. Barren Island, spread over 3 km, is the easternmost island of the Andaman Islands. Baron means barren. Barren, where no one lives. This island has been named after itself, there is no human population living here. The forest here is also negligible. Only a small number of animals and birds have been seen on this island. Records are available about its island from 1787 and since then 11 volcanoes have erupted here. The smoke keeps coming out from time to time, that is, it remains active continuously. However, the last time it erupted was in the year 2016 and lava was coming out for several days. This is the reason that even to go around it needs special permission which has to be taken from the forest department of the island group. Even today, smoke can be seen coming out of it. The waters around Barren Island are reputed to be among the top scuba diving destinations in the world. The water around it is considered very good and safe in the world for learning scuba diving. Due to being near the volcano, corals, lava, and many different types of fish can be seen in this water.
